travel tip #58
Are the skies not so sunny? When booking a trip to a resort in a hurricane-prone area from June through November, check their weather policy. Many resorts offer a refund or an upgrade on a future visit if the airport is closed or the area is under a hurricane warning or watch.

Top Ten Favorite
Travel Apps
(cont.)

1: SplashTravel. This is my new favorite app for travel. I usually don't pay for apps, but this one was worth it. It has a currency converter, flight tracker, tip calculator, packing list and more, but my favorite feature is Trips. I often read about restaurants and hotels I may want to check out in the future but by the time I go there, I can't find where I wrote them down! Now I just add in a trip, and then add the restaurants and hotels I've read or heard about and I'm all set.
$4.99.

2: Around Me. Where to stop for lunch? This fun little app tells you where the closest restaurants, banks, bars, gas stations, hotels and more are, and even includes the weather and fun facts about nearby towns. Free.

3: Maps. A little GPS right on my phone, I use it to find places and follow our progress as we take road trips. Free.

4: Cheap Gas. Find the cheapest gas and the route to get there. Free

5 Local Picks. I pretty much can't plan any trip without Trip Advisor, and this app combines more than 1.5 million reviews of half a million restaurants from around the world. This is a great one to use at home as well. Free

6 Good Food. Eating healthy on the road is no longer such a challenge with this app, which gives you suggestions for menu items near you along with nutrition information. Free.

7. Quick Office. Great for business travelers, this app allows you to create, access, edit and share Excel and Word docs. $7.99.

8. Merck Manual. Based on the Merck Manual Home Health Handbook, this is a nice app to have on the road should you encounter illness or injury. $9.99

9. Wi Fi Finder. On deadline with a book and desperate for wi fi, I once tottered along the streets of New Haven, laptop open, looking for a quick connection. With this app, it's easy to find free or paid wi fi near you. Free.

10. Flashlight. This app does exactly as the name implies, turns the screen of your iPhone bright white. It's great for navigating dark streets or locating items in your purse in the dark. Free.
