Helping the environment has been on the travelgirl agenda since the magazine’s inception. The travelgirl founders, Stephanie Oswald and Renee Werbin, salute wanderlust that gives the planet a little TLC. Earth Day is April 22nd. If you can’t plant a tree, take a few minutes to plant these six earth-saving ideas in your mind whether you are at home or on the go.
This issue’s savvy six picks: globetrotter’s tips to save the world:
Two words: shorter showers! Wherever you are in the world, this is one way to save water and have a positive impact. Wouldn’t you rather soak in the ocean anyhow?
On-the-go recycling. Don’t leave your good habits at home. Whether you’re on a business trip or spending a week at the business trip or spending a week at the beach, recycle whenever you can.
Change the plumbing. Renovating your vacation home? Install smart plumbing devices that encourage water conservation, such as toilets, faucets and showerheads with reduced water flow. Check out the options at: www.homedepot.com/ecooptions
Refill those 3 ounce and under bottles. Manufacturers love to sell those 3 ounce and under sample size bottles. New airport regulations require these small size containers for your carry-on liquids. Purchase wisely: Buy one small size bottle and then purchase the largest size of your favorite shampoo. Refill is your new mantra. You are economizing and going green, throwing away less plastic and reusing what you have.
Practice pedal control. Non-motorized transportation (walking, cycling, kayaking, etc.) is the smartest choice to help the earth, but we realize most travelers find themselves behind the steering wheel more often than not. When that happens, honor the speed limit to improve gas mileage and help emissions.
Have gadgets, will buy rechargeable batteries. Did you know that batteries contain hazardous materials and it can be dangerous to the environment to merely throw them away? When you must discard your batteries please look for a hazardous waste collection site or return them to the manufacturer to discard. Help the earth stay green by switching to rechargeable batteries. They are available almost everywhere that regular batteries are sold.
