Jan Gets a Blog!
I realized one of my long-time goals and launched my Girl on the Go blog covering travel-related news, events in Atlanta and relationships. Check out other blogs from travelgirl contributors here.
Global Cuisine
in Dallas
Everything is larger in Texas, so it's no surprise that Dallas boasts the largest urban arts district in the world. The Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center, Meyerson Symphony Center and the new Dallas Center for the Performing Arts make this a must-see destination when you visit. A new multi-use development in the area, One Arts Plaza, has now opened and includes five restaurants with international cuisine, from Japanese to Tex-Mex to Italian. Check it out at www.oneartsplaza.com
Get ICED on the Potomac
What would George Washington have said? ICE! is making its debut in D.C. at Gaylord National's Christmas on the Potomac, from November 19 to January 10. Visitors can step into a winter wonderland fashioned from 5,000 blocks of ice hand-sculpted by 40 artisans, with 10 scenes including an ice bridge, two slides, Santa's Toyland and a South Pole igloo with dancing penguins. www.gaylordnational.com
World's Scariest Bridges
I admit it – I don't like big, high bridges. On our last trip to Charleston I looked for photos to verify that the old bridge had been blown up so I wouldn't have to huddle in the backseat when we went over it again. So I was kinda intrigued by TripAdvisor's list of the Top 5 Scariest Bridges in the World, and quickly made a mental note to steer very clear of all of them. Except the pedestrian ones, which for some reason I can handle.
They are:
1. Langkawi Sky Bridge, Kedah, Malaysia (pictured)
2. Capilano Suspension Bridge, North Vancouver, British Columbia
3. Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Antrim, North Ireland
4. Trift Bridge, Gadmen, Switzerland
5. Royal Gorge Bridge, Canon City, Colorado
Songwriters Festival in Martha's Vineyard
After going to Tin Pan South in Nashville, I'm a big fan of songwriter festivals and would love to attend the first one in Martha's Vineyard, September 18 and 19. Combine live music in intimate settings and you've got a wonderful evening. Performers include Hugh Prestwood, Natalie Hemby, Kim Carnes, Scotty Emerick and Chris Barron. Tickets are $25 for each show; both nights for $45. www.ticketsMV.com.
pick of the week
If you're always struggling with that need-an-extra-hand thing, this handle drink holder from tugo might be the answer for carting a beverage while dragging your suitcase. Tie it on the handle of your bag and you can slip a drink right in there. When you're done, just pull it off and throw it in your suitcase or handbag. $9.95 at www.goodtugu.com
