Lauren Hutton once said that without travel, "I would have wound up a little ignorant white Southern female, which was not my idea of a good life." I'm a white, Southern female and there's nothing I can, or would do about that, but as for the ignorant part? I've learned and experienced so much from my travels this year - from ziplining in Costa Rica, to exploring the limestone-mosaic sidewalks of Lisbon, to cruising the deep waters of Lake Tahoe. I even learned how to fold a napkin into an elf shoe at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, a technique I'm hoping to master this holiday season.
Whatever your reason for travel, we wish you safe, happy travels during the holiday season!

get away to south walton

I've squished a lot of sand between my toes on beaches around the world, but the prettiest I've ever seen are right here in the U.S. at The Beaches of South Walton on the panhandle of Florida. This group of 15 unique beach communities has several holiday deals: a romance package at Watercolor Inn that includes two nights, dinner for two and two 50-minute massages; and a Sandestin Winter Wonderland Package, with accommodations starting at just $119. Check out the beautiful Lake Defuniak, which is lit up for the holidays with 4.5 million lights. For plenty more, visit www.beachesofsouthwalton.com

the reason for the season - houston

No matter what your religion, you'll want to check out this new exhibition at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The exhibition starts December 12 and runs through April 12, 2009. www.hmns.org

pick of the week

"Note to self: make 139 loaves of banana bread, 25 gingerbread Christmas ornaments and address 75 holiday cards. By tomorrow." Well, it can't do your holiday chores for you, but you can keep the family on track with this voice calendar and family message center. Just stick it on the fridge and every member of the family can record events. Then you can check each day for that day's activities. It's also perfect for recording your to-do list. Beats my usual system of Post-it notes on the bathroom mirror. $39.95 at www.buyjenda.com
